GMC-12-III Rail Grinder

R&D Background

Rail grinding train, also called rail grinder. We developed the medium-sized GMC-12-III rail grinder, to rapidly eliminate rail surface defects, restore standard rail profiles and optimize wheel-rail interaction. It effectively reduces resource consumption of heavy grinders on corrugated curved rails, and it makes up for the low productivity of small grinding machines. Its control system is equipped with the Delta AS564EST-B motion controller. It supports the "6+N" grinding mode, provides stepless travel speed regulation, and realizes intelligent control of grinding operations. The grinding angle can be swiftly adjusted during travel to meet grinding needs for various working conditions. It is worth noting that our rail grinders have been granted utility model patents. GMC-12-III Rail Grinder

Main Components of Our GMC-12-III Rail Grinder

Our GMC-12-III rail grinder consists of a travelling assembly, grinding assembly, control cabinet, vehicle chassis, driver’s cabin and generator set, as shown in the figure below. It is powered by a Cummins generator set, which supplies consistent and reliable power for all onboard operations. The travelling system is equipped with variable-frequency motors paired with reduction gearboxes to drive the vehicle forward and reverse. The control system is equipped with dual motion controllers operating in tandem. This significantly improves the efficiency of logical computation and motion control, and allows all the 36 axes to perform fast synchronized movements.

Our GMC-12-III Rail Grinder Advantages

Our GMC12 Series Rail Grinder is ideal for operators managing railway lines within 200 km, as well as professional rail grinding service firms. It features extremely high cost-effectiveness, it supports multi-unit linkage to enable efficient working operations. And its unit price ranges from USD 400,000 to 600,000. Other advantages: User-friendly Operation; Reduced Labor Intensity; High Operational Efficiency.

Grinding Performance and Operational Efficiency of Our GMC-12-III Rail Grinder

1. Rail Profile Restoration

It takes merely one track possession window for our GMC-12-III rail grinder to complete rail profile restoration for one turnout, boosting operational efficiency fifteenfold compared with conventional methods. As shown below, we have conducted follow-up monitoring on turnout conditions at Yalu Station one year post rail profile grinding. Findings: The running band is centered on the rail profile and ranges from 25–35 mm in width. Wheel-rail coupling reaches its optimum state, and vehicle hunting is markedly reduced. For further details, please see details in the pictures below.

2. Rail Flange Trimming:

As shown in the images below: 3 mm-thick rail flanges were found on turnouts at Harbin Track Maintenance Section. Our GMC-12III rail grinder can remove these defects in just 2–3 grinding passes. Rail flange trimming for two turnout sets can be completed within a single track possession window. For further details, please see details in the pictures below.

3. Turnout Frog Profile Grinding

As shown in the images below, our rail grinding vehicle performs rail profile grinding for turnout frogs. The left image displays our grinding heads lifted to pass across the harmful gap of the turnout frog, whereas the right image shows our grinding heads lowered to perform rail profile grinding on the frog. For further details, please see details in the pictures below.

4. Turnout and Curve Rail Grinding

As shown in the figures below, The left-hand photo displays our self-developed variable-diameter explosion-proof grinding wheels with proprietary intellectual property rights. They are used for grinding turnout frog cores and stock rails adjacent to guard rails. The right-hand photo shows corrective and preventive rail grinding, which removes rail defects on curved tracks, turnouts and other track segments.

Grinding Quality Inspection for Our GMC-12-III Rail Grinder

We conducted grinding tests on rails and turnout rails with our GMC-12-III rail grinder, and the Metal Chemistry Institute of CARS tracked and inspected the grinding quality continuously. The test results show below that the ground profile, grinding depth, ground surface width, ground surface roughness and surface quality all comply with the requirements specified in Circular Tiezong Yun〔2014〕No. 357 and standard Q/CR 681-2018. Let us take a closer look at the two primary inspection items as follows.

1. Grinding Profile

The profile tolerances after grinding shall comply with the requirements specified in the table below. Acceptance Tolerances for Rail Head Grinding Profile (Manual Measurement):

Operating Speed (km/h)Rail Head Lateral Range: −25 mm to +25 mmTolerance (mm)Rail Head Lateral Range: +25 mm to +32 mmTolerance (mm)
< 200+0.3 / −0.3+0.2 / −0.6
≥ 200+0.2 / −0.2+0.2 / −0.6

Note: The plus (+) and minus (−) signs denote the deviation of the actual measured profile from the designed target profile: = measured profile higher than target; − = measured profile lower than target.

2. Ground Surface Roughness

We tested the railhead surface roughness of test-section rails after grinding, and the measured data are listed in the table below. All roughness results are under 10 μm, which meets the criteria outlined in the Technical Specification for Acceptance of Heavy Machinery Grinding for High‑Speed Railway Rails and Turnouts and the Administrative Measures for High‑Speed Railway Rail Grinding. As shown in the table below, it is test Section Railhead Roughness:
